HINSDALE, Ill. – Lane Tech withstood a last-second shot to narrowly defeat Waubonsie Valley 45-44 in the consolation semifinal of the 2025 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Lane Tech (6-6 record) got off to a fast start and led 11-1 in the early going. However, the Warriors (7-5 record) finally found their footing and drew to within 13-12 in the second quarter. Waubonsie Valley threw a high full-court press at the Champions throughout and were able to create some havoc in the backcourt.

At halftime, the score stood 22-20 in Lane Tech's favor. Matt Szafoni made 4 of 5 field goals for nine points, while Cole Christian added seven points of his own. The Champions were especially effective inside the arc, making 9 of 11 shots in the half. WV was paced by Aiden Lee's 10 points.

In the third quarter, the Warriors took twice as many field goal attempts as the Champions and grabbed the lead 31-30 on a fast-break dunk by Kyler Payne. The fourth quarter was nip and tuck the rest of the way with neither side leading by more than three points. Lee's sank a layup and a three to give WV a 44-43 lead down the stretch. But Lane Tech hit the go-ahead bucket in the final 15 seconds when guard JJ Barnes converted a fadeaway jumper in the lane. A last-second attempt by the Warriors fell short to end the game.

The box score featured 59 percent field goal shooting by Lane Tech, including 33 percent from three-point range (5-15). Szafoni was a force down low with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Christian and John Lamperis totaled nine points each.

The Warriors shot 43 percent overall from the field and only 17 percent from deep (3-18). Lee scored a team-best 17 points. Payne posted 11 points, six rebounds and three steals. Kris Mporokoso finished with 10 points and three steals.

Lane Tech will face off with Wheaton Academy in the consolation championship on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 3:45 p.m., while Waubonsie Valley and Lincoln-Way East will play at 12:30 p.m.
