HINSDALE, Ill. – Marcos Gonzales and Jack Weigus combined to score 42 points to lead Brother Rice to a 75-59 victory over Maine South and into the semifinals of the 2024 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. Maine South (5-7) led 12-10 after the first quarter, but Brother Rice (12-0) surged back in the second, building a 31-27 lead at the half. Brother Rice continued to pull away in the third and fourth quarters, leading by as many as 18 points before finishing with the 16-point victory. The Crusaders’ starting lineup totaled 69 of the team’s 75 points. Gonzales led the way with a game-high 23 points while shooting 8-of-16 from the floor. He added four rebounds, four steals and four assists. Weigus added 19 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-of-15 from the floor. KJ Morris added 11 points while Max Justic added 10 points and four assists. Caden Workman tallied six points and team-best seven rebounds. Brother Rice shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the floor, including 3-of-9 from downtown. The Crusaders outscored Maine South 50-34 in the paint. Maine South shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field in the loss. Panayiotis Sotos led the Hawks with 21 points while shooting 8-of-18. Rico D’Alessandro added 18 points and eight rebounds while Tyler Sierra finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Brother Rice will await the winner of the Lane Tech/Rockford Auburn contest in tomorrow’s semifinal at 7:00 p.m. Maine South will face the loser of the Lane Tech/Rockford Auburn contest tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. in the consolation round.
