2022 GAME FIVE RECAP: MARIAN CATHOLIC 51, MAINE SOUTH 39

HINSDALE, Ill. – Marian Catholic led wire-to-wire to beat Maine South 51-39 on Tuesday in game five of the 2022 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Marian Catholic improved its season record to 8-4. Maine South dropped to 3-8 on the year.

MC got off to a quick start, jumping ahead 10-2 in the opening minutes. By the end of the quarter, the Spartans were holding an 18-9 advantage that they would not surrender.

The Hawks couldn't close the gap in the second quarter. MC's Quentin Jones provided an exclamation to the proceedings by throwing down a fast-break dunk in transition. The rim-rattling slam immediately prompted a Maine South timeout with the scoreboard reading 31-18. At the half, Marian Catholic led 33-18. Jones and Tre Davis combined for 18 points as the team shot 60 percent from the field.    

Maine South remained fiesty in the third quarter, hitting some three-pointers to pull closer, but the Spartans still held a comfortable 43-31 advantage heading into the fourth. The final quarter featured minimal scoring from both sides, as Marian Catholic kept its 12-point lead to account for the 51-39 final score.

 The Spartans ended up shooting 44.7 percent from the field, including 5 of 15 from three-point range. Davis led the way with 14 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Davis put up 12 points while James Bullock added 11 points and eight rebounds. 

The Hawks were held to 38.5 percent shooting on field goals with a 5 of 15 performance from beyond the arc. Tyler Sierra led the squad with 11 points.     

Marian Catholic will face the winner of the Rockford Auburn/Willowbrook matchup in Tuesday's quarterfinal at 7:00 p.m. Maine South will play the loser of the Rockford Auburn/Willowbrook contest in Tuesday's consolation bracket at 12:30 p.m.
