Over a span of eight
days, state champions were crowned at the largest levels of competition in
both Illinois and California. Although those state champions are more
than 2000 miles apart, there was one common bond between the two schools --
both will be playing in the inaugural Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic,
December 26, 28, 29, 30, 2015.
Stevenson High School from Lincolnshire, Illinois was crowned the Illinois
High School Association Class 4A Champion. The Patriots defeated
Normal Community 57-40 in the title game. Stevenson was anchored by a
pair of Division I signees in Jalen Brunson (Villanova) and Connor
Cashaw (Rice). Sophomore starter Justin Smith, a 6-7 forward, is
ranked among the top two prospects in Illinois' class of 2017.
Stevenson made their third straight Final Four appearance in the Illinois
state finals, finishing second in 2013 and third in 2014.
Crespi Carmelite High School from Encino, California won the California
Interscholastic Federation Division IV championship one week later by
defeating Capital Christian 47-44. Crespi won their first state
championship in their first appearance at the CIF state finals. Junior
De'Anthony Melton led all scorers in the title game and recorded a
double-double by posting 13 points and 13 rebounds. Melton, who set
the single-season school record for the Celts for steals in a season,
blocked a potential game tying shot with seconds remaining.
