2021 GAME FIVE RECAP: MARIAN CATHOLIC vs. RICHARDS

HINSDALE, Ill. – Marian Catholic clamped down defensively against Richards and claimed a 61-32 victory in game five of the 2021 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair that ended narrowly in Marian Catholic's favor. Both teams shot above 61 percent on their field-goal attempts. A three-pointer by MC's Jeremiah Jones staked his squad to a 15-5 lead. But the Bulldogs found their stride as the quarter progressed to cut the deficit to one point.

Offense proved hard to come by for the remainder of the game for Richards. The Bulldogs shot 17.8 percent from the field from the second through fourth quarters and did not crack double digits in those periods.

Marian Catholic made its big move in the second quarter, outscoring Richards 16-3. Eleven of those points came off turnovers. Jeremiah Jones posted 14 of his points in the first half as the Spartans went ahead 35-21 at halftime. Deven Jiles kept the Bulldogs afloat with 13 first-half points.    

Both teams struggled in the third quarter, shooting under 20 percent combined. But Marian Catholic righted the ship with a 17-4 push in the fourth quarter to finish off the win by 29 points.

The Spartans converted 43.4 percent of their field goals, 28.6 percent of their threes (4-14) and 57.9 percent of their free throws (11-19). Jeremiah Jones paced all scorers with 19 points, while also securing four blocks, five steals and five rebounds. Quentin Jones grabbed 11 rebounds and scored six points.

The Bulldogs went 30.8 percent from the field, 25 percent from deep (4-16) and 50 percent from the charity stripe (4-8). Jiles led the squad with 13 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Trevis Garmon put up 11 rebounds to go with seven points.

Marian Catholic (8-4 record) will play Oswego East in Thursday’s quarterfinal at 7:00 p.m. Richards (6-5 record) will face off with Rockford Auburn in the consolation bracket on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
