2017 GAME 14 RECAP: St. Rita 48, Maine South 43

HINSDALE, Ill. – Saint Rita overcame foul trouble to rally past Maine South for a 48-43 victory and a spot in the semifinals of the 2017 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Maine South (8-3) was red hot in the opening quarter, racing out to a 19-8 lead after the first eight minutes. Saint Rita (7-7) clawed their way back in during the second quarter, closing the gap to just six points (27-21) at halftime.

The Mustangs chipped three more points off the lead in the third quarter, entering the fourth trailing by just three at 37-34. Maine South pushed its lead back to seven points on a Tommy Gardner layup with seven minutes remaining, but the Hawks did not score for the remainder of the game as Saint Rita closed the contest on a 12-0 run, keyed by six straight points from Doug Posley.

Jordan Matthews led Saint Rita and all scorers with a game-high 16 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor. Ten different players put points on the scoreboard for the Mustangs who overcame fouling out three players in the contest, including two early in the third quarter. Saint Rita shot 41.5 percent from the floor (17-of-41), including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three-point range.

Maine South finished the contest shooting 51.4 percent (19-of-37) but struggled from the foul line, hitting just 3-of-10 free throws. Fillip Bulatovic and Tommy Gardiner scored 12 points apiece to pace the Hawks in the loss.

Maine South will take on Stevenson tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. in the fifth-place bracket. Saint Rita earned a matchup against DePaul prep in tomorrow’s semifinal set for 7:00 p.m.
